Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prison Houses' Condition.

Tony Gregory

Question:

173 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the reason the houses at Cowley Place, Mountjoy Prison, Dublin 7 have been left in a derelict condition; when the redevelopment of this area will proceed; and if the houses will be properly secured in the meantime. [10976/96]

The former prison staff housing at Cowley Place, North Circular Road, Dublin beside Mountjoy Prison is no longer in use and considered to be beyond economic repair or refurbishment.

The site at Cowley Place, which includes the former staff housing, is earmarked for a new purpose-built women's prison. With the approval of the Government, work in connection with the provision of the new women's prison has recommenced and design work for the proposed new facility is being advanced. It is proposed to initiate the appropriate planning process for this development under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Regulations, 1994, in the near future. Steps have been taken to make these houses secure and safe pending clearance of the site.
