Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - Census Enumerators.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

51 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Taoiseach the procedure by which the positions of census enumerators were chosen; the total number of census enumerators in the country; the number of census enumerators in County Louth; the proportion of persons taken from the live register; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10692/96]

Vacancies for 3,400 temporary part-time census enumerators were advertised by the Central Statistics Office in the national and provincial press in November 1995. Posters advertising the vacancies were also displayed in FÁS offices countrywide and in Department of Social Welfare local employment offices to encourage suitable persons on the live register to apply. Application forms were issued and returned through FÁS. Some 8,200 candidates were assessed by means of open competitive interview. The interviews were conducted by temporary census field supervisors employed by the Central Statistics Office at various centres throughout the country. Appointments were subsequently offered by census management on an order of merit basis as determined by the interview boards, taking locational factors into account, with preference given to persons not in paid employment.

The numbers appointed who were not in paid employment are shown below. Data are given for the State as a whole with comparative figures for County Louth:
