Vol. 466 No. 2

Written Answers. - Health Risks.

Ivor Callely

Question:

75 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he intends to highlight to Irish persons travelling to exotic destinations where there are health risks the importance of taking necessary precautions or preventive measures before travelling in view of the inadequate information in the Health Promotion Unit travel leaflet and in view of the requirements of EU Directive 90/314/EEC. [11207/96]

The Health Promotion Unit of my Department does indeed provide a booklet entitled General Health Information for People Travelling Abroad which contains comprehensive information on the health requirements and precautions that should be taken when travelling abroad, including information on obtaining E111 forms, advice on health insurance, compulsory and recommended vaccinations, AIDS, rabies and sunburn.

The Health Promotion Unit also provides a leaflet entitled The Sun Seekers Guide to Health which informs of the dangers of over-explosure to sunlight. Both of these leaflets are available free of charge and are available to the general public and travel agents on demand.

The Deputy may wish to note that the EU Directive to which he refers places obligations on travel agents and travel operators and not on the Department of Health.
