Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Legalisation of Heroin.

Noel Ahern

Question:

121 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice her views on whether the request for legalisation of heroin by the Chairman of the Independent Radio and Television Commission is unhelpful in her fight against drugs and crime; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11920/96]

On 20 February my colleague the Minister for Health, Deputy Noonan, obtained Government approval for a package of demand reduction measures to prevent drug misuse. Included in these measures was a clear statement that "no steps should be taken to legalise or decriminalise the use of "soft drugs" such as cannabis". The Government has, therefore, no plans to change the legal position of any drug including heroin.
