Vol. 466 No. 6

Written Answers. - Government Offices Decentralisation.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

37 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance whether it is intended to decentralise State offices to the Newry Road site in Dundalk, County Louth; if so, the current position in this regard; the proposals, if any, there are to site these offices elsewhere in the town of Dundalk; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12105/96]

As the Deputy will be aware, a State-owned site is available on the Newry Road in Dundalk where it was intended to contruct the decentralised offices. However, it has come to notice that certain characteristics of the site and the presence there of pre-fabs housing a number of staff, impose cost pressures — including the need for construction to be carried out in two separate phases — which give rise to construction costs higher than would arise on another site. Efforts are being made to locate an alternative site and it is hoped that this process can be brought to a successful conclusion shortly.
