Vol. 466 No. 8

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

Dan Wallace

Question:

36 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment the total number of housing requests currently on the books of each local authority in the country; the total number of transfer requests; and the total number of housing starts initiated by each local authority during 1995. [9299/96]

The need for local authority housing is determined by periodic assessments carried out by local authorities. The latest assessment was carried out on 29 March 1996. Returns showing the results of the assessments were due by 30 April but have not yet been received in my Department from all local authorities. Requests for the submission of outstanding returns as soon as possible have been made to the authorities concerned. When all the returns have been received and collated, the results of the assessments will be published in my Department's Housing Statistics Bulletin, copies of which will be placed in the Oireachtas Library.

Information is not available in the Department on the number of tenants who have applied to local authorities for transfer to another dwelling.

Information on housing starts in 1995 is contained in my Department's annual Housing Statistics Bulletin for 1995, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.
