Vol. 466 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hazardous Waste.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

61 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for the Environment the total amount of hazardous waste produced in Ireland in the last year for which figures are available; and the percentage of this waste that was exported. [12366/96]

A total of 99,393 tonnes of hazardous waste was produced in Ireland in 1992, the latest year for which detailed statistics are available. Of this amount, 19.7 per cent or 19,591 tonnes was exported for recovery and-or disposal.

The Environmental Protection Agency is carrying out a major project on waste statistics and the creation of a national database on waste. As indicated in reply to Question No. 159 on 21 May 1996, I understand the project is at an advanced stage and the agency expects to be in a position to publish a report in the near future.
