Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Carndonagh (Donegal) District Hospital.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

127 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Health whether funding will be made available to facilitate the building of an extension to Carndonagh District Hospital, County Donegal, for the growing number of long-stay patients in view of the fact that no other such accommodation exists in north Inishowen; and if he will make a statement on the priority that these long-stay patients can expect to receive. [12493/96]

Limerick East): The provision of long-stay accommodation in County Donegal is, in the first instance, a matter for the North-Western Health Board. It is the board's policy to provide long-stay beds for the elderly within their own catchment area. This must necessarily be achieved on a gradual basis, having regard to the board's overall priorities and the availability of resources. The board's top priority at present is the building of the community hospital in Killybegs.

At present the board has assigned 34 beds in long-stay facilities to cater for the North Inishowen elderly population. These are distributed as follows:

Carndonagh District Hospital

24 beds

St. Joseph's Hospital, Stranorlar

6 beds

Nazareth House, Fahan

4 beds
