Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Kerry Water Scheme.

Denis Foley

Question:

199 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for the Environment the current position regarding the submission from Kerry County Council in relation to the north east Kerry regional water supply scheme - section 1, phase 2, Smearle Dam; and whether he will grant approval to proceed with preliminary planning. [12865/96]

The preliminary report for this scheme, which relates to the feasibility of constructing a dam on the Smearla river and includes contract documents for a site investigation and topographic survey to determine the suitability of the proposed location of a dam, has been submitted to my Department by Kerry County Council. Having regard to the high level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to advance the scheme, the latest estimated cost of which is £37 million.
