Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Bus Route.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

240 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education if she will consider the case of a person (details supplied) in County Donegal by sanctioning a slight alteration in a school bus run to facilitate this person. [12769/96]

Post-primary school transport routes are planned so that, as far as possible, no eligible child will have more than three miles to travel to a pick-up point. An extension or rerouting of a school transport service to enable a pupil to be picked up or set down at home may only be considered where the pupil is medically handicapped, and the condition is such as to prevent them from making their own way to the pick-up point. On the basis of the medical evidence submitted, my Department's medical adviser has determined that these conditions do not apply in this case. As this pupil is already availing of a reasonable level of service in the context of the general operation of the scheme, I regret that I am not in a position to alter the existing arrangements.
