Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Whiddy Island (Cork) Pier.

Joe Walsh

Question:

85 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Taoiseach the plans, if any, he has to provide a pier on Whiddy Island, County Cork, for the benefit of the islanders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12412/96]

In accordance with the report of the Interdepartmental Coordinating Committee on Island Development, the relevant local authority islands committees, in consultation with islanders and Comhdháil Oileáin na hÉireann, have prepared prioritised programmes of works for bringing the level of access services to the offshore islands up to a socially desirable minimum standard. The proposals reflect the priority needs of the islands concerned.

These programmes of work, which will form the basis for the allocation of funds specifically available for island access in 1996, are currently being examined by the interdepartmental coordinating committee and I expect to be in a position to announce details of funding to a number of projects shortly. The programme of work for Cork County Council islands has identified the upgrading of the pontoon pier at Castletownbere as the priority project for 1996.

With regard to Creamery Pier on Whiddy Island, to which I presume the Deputy is referring, I understand that this is being funded jointly by Cork County Council and the Irish National Petroleum Corporation and that arrangements for this project are at an advanced stage.
