Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tractor Registrations.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

96 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance the number of tractors first registered in Ireland in the period since January 1996 or any earlier period; whether local authorities make such returns to his Department or any other Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12457/96]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners, who have responsibility for the registration of all vehicles with effect from 1 January 1993, that the total number of tractors, both new and used, registered by them during the period 1 January 1996 to 31 May 1996 amounted to 4,406. This figure covers both agricultural tractors which numbered 4,322 and general haulage tractors which numbered 84. The figures for earlier years are as follows:

Year

Agricultural Tractors

General Haulage Tractors

Total

1993

8,962

36

8,998

1994

8,416

190

8,606

1995

8,607

169

8,776

While the question of my Department receiving returns from local authorities does not consequently arise I am informed that the Revenue Commissioners provide details of all vehicles registered by them to the Department of the Environment on a daily basis.
