Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Director of Traffic for Dublin.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

99 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment when she expects the Garda to lose its responsibility for traffic in Dublin in view of the announcement by the Minister for the Environment on 1 August 1995. [13062/96]

The Government has decided that there should be a Director of Traffic for Dublin who would take over responsibility from the Garda for the administration of the traffic warden and tow-away services, and for the fines-on-the-spot system, introduce wheelclamping, and have overall operational responsibility for traffic management in Dublin City. Consultants were recently appointed to undertake a study to define the organisational structures required to ensure that the director can fully and effectively discharge his/her functions and that the new unit within Dublin corporation will have optimum operational capacity, functional independence, and self-financing capability. This study is expected to be completed within the next three months. Firm decisions can then be made on implementation matters generally, including the appointment of a director and the timing of the transfers of functions involved.
