Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remand Centre.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

15 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to build a remand centre for persons remanded in custody pending trial; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12896/96]

In the normal course, approximately 10 per cent of all persons in custody at any given time are held on remand. Currently there are approximately 270 persons on remand.

Arising from her review of detention facilities over the past 18 months the Minister accepts that the provision of special separate facilities for remand prisoners may be feasible. She will, therefore, pursue this matter when the current prison building programme is completed.
