Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Repeat Crime Victims.

Noel Davern

Question:

34 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Justice her views on the level of repeat crime victims; the plans, if any, she has to tackle this problem; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12886/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that an ESRI survey carried out in 1994 showed that 1.5 per cent of the respondents had been the victims of crime on two or more occasions within a three year period.

The Garda Síochána are constantly developing and implementing crime prevention strategies with a view to preventing crime and reducing the level of crime victimisation. This approach includes the extension of community based initiatives such as Neighbourhood Watch and Community Alert. Garda resources are constantly targeted at high-crime areas and special attention is also paid to vulnerable people such as the elderly and those residing in remote areas.
