Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sexual Offences Sentencing.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

40 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Justice whether she will review the law in relation to sentencing in cases of sexual offences where a suspended sentence is handed down and where the accused has indicated he will be leaving the jurisdiction; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12850/96]

As the Deputy may be aware, the Law Reform Commission is currently preparing a report on sentencing. It is likely that suspended sentences will be among the matters addressed in that report. I consider that any review of the law on suspended sentences for sexual offences should await the Commission's recommendations.
