Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Common Contract for Prison Doctors.

Máirín Quill

Question:

61 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Justice the length of time that negotiations have been ongoing between her Department and the Irish Medical Organisation regarding a common contract of employment in the context of the provision of medical services in prisons and places of detention; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12854/96]

Negotiations regarding the establishment of a common contract of employment for all doctors providing medical services to the prisons and places of detention commenced in March 1993. The Department of Justice issued a draft contract containing revised terms and conditions of employment to the Irish Medical Organisation in October 1992.

The Minister expects that these negotiations will be finalised soon. However, like all negotiations, this depends on the acceptability to all sides of proposals put on the table.
