Question:

125 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total amount of moneys paid out under EU compensatory payments to farmers to date in 1996; the total moneys paid out in 1995; the headings and brief for such payments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13857/96]

I propose to take Questions No. 124 and 125 together.

The total amount paid to farmers under 1995 EU schemes amounted to £489.4 million. A further £256.1 million was paid to farmers during 1995 in respect of previous years EU schemes.
The total amount of EU compensatory headage payments to farmers to date in 1996 amounts to £10.9 million. The total of such payments made in 1995 was £118.5 million. Details of the breakdown and background to each scheme are given in my Department's annual report and in the booklet on schemes and services which is published annually by my Department.
