Question:

39 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to relax the eligible land rules under the EU scheme for set-aside and area aid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13771/96]

I have raised with the EU Commission the difficulties which the eligible land rule is causing cereal producers here and I have proposed a number of solutions to the problem. These proposals are currently being considered in Brussels. In the meantime I have introduced some flexibility in the rule under which farmers can transfer eligibility from eligible to ineligible land within a holding
