Written Answers. - Askeaton (Limerick) Pollution Investigation.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

57 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total cost to date of the arrangements made with the two Askeaton farmers in County Limerick involved in the investigation of pollution in their area; the expected final cost of the deal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13670/96]

The Environmental Protection Agency is co-ordinating the overall investigation into cattle illnesses and deaths in the Askeaton area. My Department has responsibility for the animal health study aspect only.

The total net costs to date to my Department in respect of the animal health study amount to £1,042,681. These costs are exclusive of the Department's administrative and research costs. The expected final cost is estimated to be £1,300,000.
