Vol. 467 No. 6

Written Answers. - Ballymote (Sligo) Designated Status.

John Ellis

Question:

78 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment whether he will grant designated status to Ballymote, County Sligo. [13865/96]

The present urban renewal scheme commenced in August 1994 and will operate for a three year period in 35 centres throughout the country. A comprehensive review of the impact, effectiveness and cost of the urban renewal schemes which have operated to date is currently under way to assist in the formulation of future policy in this area.

It is not intended that the current scheme will be extended to any additional towns or areas. It would be inappropriate to consider what new areas, if any, might be suitable for designation as part of any future scheme until general policy in relation to the next phase of urban renewal is determined in the light of the review.
