Vol. 467 No. 6

Written Answers. - Literacy Service.

Helen Keogh

Question:

84 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education the response, if any, she intends to make in relation to the publication entitled A Call for Action to Ensure a High Quality Literacy Service from the National Adult Literary Agency; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13820/96]

Copies of the document in question have been furnished to my Department by the National Adult Literacy Agency. The proposals put forward in the document, which relate to my Department's White Paper Charting or Education Future, are currently under consideration and I have requested officials of my Department to arrange a meeting with representatives of NALA to discuss the submission.

My commitment to develop and enhance the programme in place to address adult literacy and numeracy problems and adult education in general is reflected both in the policy measures proposed in the White Paper and the substantial additional funding provided in recent years to support these services.
