Vol. 467 No. 6

Written Answers. - Crime Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

106 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if she will give details of the noticeable increase in crime, particularly in the Dublin area; the additional measures, if any, she intends to introduce to redress this problem; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13850/96]

It is not the practice for the Minister for Justice to comment in detail on provisional crime figures. Accordingly, all I propose to say in this case is that the provisional figures compiled for the first five months of 1996 show that there has been a decrease in the overall number of indictable crimes recorded as compared to the corresponding period last year.

I have on many occasions outlined in the Dáil the wide-ranging measures that have been taken to combat crime, including legislation, regulations, ministerial orders, administrative changes e.g. regionalisation of Garda, courts service decision etc. I will continue to process further changes in the law as required as well as providing continued resources for the fight against crime.
