Vol. 467 No. 6

Written Answers. - Students' Summer Jobs.

John Browne

Question:

109 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason final year third-level students are not entitled to avail of the students' summer job scheme in spite of the fact that they are unlikely to find jobs for a period of time after leaving college. [13840/96]

The underlying purpose of the scheme is to provide income support for the less well-off third-level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance under 1993 legislation.

Therefore priority is being given to enabling the maximum number of eligible low income students to participate within the overall financial allocation for the 1996 scheme of £10.2 million.

Third-level students who have completed a course of study have a legal right to unemployment assistance, subject to means-testing in the event that they do not find work.
