Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Student Summer Jobs Scheme.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

307 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a person (details supplied) in County Wexford who is continuing in third level education was refused access to the student summer jobs scheme; the reason he was refused; if he will reconsider his decision on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14250/96]

An application form for admission to the student summer job scheme received from the person concerned was returned to him on 17 June for further information. There is no record in my Department that the application form has been returned with the additional information requested.

If the person concerned returns the form immediately and supplies the information which was requested a decision will be given without delay.

Question:

308 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to an unsuccessful application for the student summer jobs scheme by a person (details supplied) in County Wexford; the reason this application was refused; if he will reconsider his decision in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14251/96]

The underlying purpose of the scheme is to provide income support for the less well off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance under the change in social welfare law in 1993 and are unable to obtain summer work. Priority therefore is being given to enabling the maximum number of eligible low income students to participate within the overall financial allocation of £10.2 million for the 1996 scheme.

The person concerned is not affected by the 1993 disqualification on students claiming unemployment assistance and consequently is not eligible for participation in the student summer job scheme.
