Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Kilkenny Barracks Closure.

Phil Hogan

Question:

432 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there are approximately 350 personnel employed at James Stephens Barracks, Kilkenny; if his attention has further been drawn to the important contribution that these personnel make to the economic fabric and development of Kilkenny city and surrounding area and that it is the only Army Battalion of its size located in the south-east region; his views on whether it is essential to preserve this Army barracks for strategic military purposes; if he will ensure that there will be no reduction in the current establishment of personnel that exists at James Stephens Military Barracks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14194/96]

On 5 March last the Government approved the plan, drawn up by the Efficiency Audit Group, for the reorganisation and restructuring of the Defence Forces. The first phase of the plan is already well under way and good progress is being made on its implementation.

The question of the closure of military barracks does not arise in the context of this plan and it should be noted that there was no reference in the decision of the Government to any barrack closures.
