Limerick East): I propose giving the figures requested by the Deputy in the following tabular form as shown in Appendix 1.
In order to address the growing problem of suicide in Ireland, I established a Task Force on Suicide in November 1995 with the following terms of reference: (i) To define numerically and qualitatively the nature of the suicide problem in Ireland; (ii) To define and to quantify the problems of attempted suicide and parasuicide in Ireland, including the associated costs involved; (iii) To make recommendations on how service providers can most cost-effectively address the problems of attempted suicide and parasuicide; (iv) To identify the various authorities with jurisdiction in suicide prevention strategies and their respective responsibilities and (v) To formulate, following consultation with all interested parties, a national suicide prevention strategy.
The task force is already well advanced in preparing an interim report, to be submitted to me shortly, in which they will quantify and define the nature of the suicide problem in Ireland. The rest of 1996 will then be devoted to a major consultative process involving all interested parties and leading to the formulation of a prevention/reduction strategy. The task force has already invited submissions from all interested members of the public, statutory and voluntary organisations.
