Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - IVF Treatment.

Máirín Quill

Question:

100 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, there are to offer IVF treatment to unmarried couples in stable relationships; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14219/96]

Limerick East): The practice of invitro fertilisation (IVF) is governed by guidelines set down by the Institute of Obstretricians and Gynaecologists, which is approved by the Medical Council, in respect of married couples only. As Minister for Health, I have no involvement in the ethical guidelines set down by the Medical Council. I do not have any plans to take an initiative in this matter.
