Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Transport Grants.

Brendan Smith

Question:

129 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education if she will extend the special transport grant to cover all of the mileage involved in the case of children attending special classes or schools in Northern Ireland and not just to the Border as the current scheme operates; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14921/96]

Under the terms and conditions of the present school transport scheme administered by my Department, transport grants are only available in respect of mileage within the State. However, the School Transport Scheme Review Committee is currently reviewing all aspects of school transport.

I have referred the issue of grants payable to children attending special classes or schools in Northern Ireland to this committee for consideration as part of the overall review of the school transport scheme.
