Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tourist Shooters.

Síle de Valera

Question:

302 Miss de Valera asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the steps, if any, being taken to ensure that tourist shooters, who bring more than one shotgun to Ireland, do not lend one to an undocumented tourist and in this way get around gun day allocations. [16029/96]

Under section 29 (2) of the Wildlife Act, 1976, out-of-State hunters must obtain a licence to hunt game. To hunt without a licence or to carry a firearm without a firearms certificate is an offence. The National Parks and Wildlife Service of my Department in monitoring wild birds and in assessing tourist shooting regularly carry out bag, gun and licence checks. A member of the Garda Síochána or an authorised person for the purpose of the 1976 Act may request an out-of-State hunter to produce his/her hunting licence for inspection.
