Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Reduction in Water Supply.

Seán Power

Question:

367 Mr. Power asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the hardship being caused to many households in County Kildare due to the reduction in water supply; and if he will give consideration to the provision of an alternative water supply. [15717/96]

The whole issue of water supply in the greater Dublin area, including Kildare, is currently under consideration in the context of the Dublin regional water supply strategy study which was published earlier this year. A personal application for the provision of an alternative water supply for the Kildare area is currently under consideration in my Department. In addition, funding has been made available for a major refurbishment of the Leixlip water plant which is increasing the availability of water to the greater Dublin area.

In January this year, I approved the appointment of consultants to prepare a preliminary report for the north east Kildare regional water supply scheme; this report is expected to be completed shortly.
