Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Student Summer Job Scheme.

Micheál Martin

Question:

746 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will facilitate the participation on the students summer job scheme of a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is currently pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree course in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15543/96]

The underlying purpose of the student summer jobs scheme is to provide income support for less well off third level students who are disqualified from claiming unemployment assistance during the summer months as a result of a change in social welfare law in 1993 if they cannot find work.

These provisions do not apply to the person concerned as he is a mature student. If he is unable to find alternative work, he may, subject to a means test, qualify for unemployment assistance.
