173 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health if he will classify rohypnol, a new drug which has been dubbed the date-rape drug. [16159/96]
Limerick East): Rohypnol, otherwise known as Flunitrazepam, is already classified as a Schedule 3 Controlled Drug under the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977 and 1984. This means that rohypnol, which is intended for the short-term treatment of insomnia, may only be supplied on presentation of a medical prescription. There are strict requirements under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations, 1988 and 1993 for the writing of prescriptions for this drug. The unauthorised possession of the drug is an offence.
