John Ellis

Question:

113 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Education the reason persons (details supplied) in County Leitrim have been refused grant aid to a third level college in view of family circumstances; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17071/96]

I understand from County Leitrim vocational education committee, the body entrusted with the administration of the 1996 European social fund aided scheme, that the applicant in question does not satisfy the reckonable income limits of that scheme

I would refer the Deputy to that body for any further information in relation to this case.

Courses at BTEC higher national diploma level or equivalent offered at approved colleges in Northern Ireland may qualify for recognition under the scholarships scheme operated by vocational education committees. The course in question is not of such level.

I understand that the person in question applied for assistance under the vocational education committee scholarships scheme. This scheme is administered by the vocational education committees in accordance with terms and conditions laid down by my Department. I understand from the vocational education committee concerned that the applicant did not meet the means test requirement of the scheme. Any further details required in regard to this application may be obtained by contacting the vocational education committee directly.
