Vol. 469 No. 2

Written Answers. - Medical Treatment.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

53 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if he will make financial provision for the treatment of children outside the State in situations where their medical condition is such that no treatment is available within the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16361/96]

Limerick East): Health boards may refer patients for treatment outside the State where certain criteria have been met, including urgent medical necessity and the non-availability of the treatment within the State. It is a matter for the health board to examine the circumstances of each individual case. The approval of the Department of Health is required only when the anticipated cost of treatment exceeds £10,000.
