164 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prisoners in detention for sex offences; the comparative number of prisoners who were in detention for sex offences in each of the years 1966, 1976 and 1986; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17219/96]

At present there are 240 persons in custody for sex offences. The number committed under sentence for sex offences in 1993, the latest year for which figures are available, was 74. The equivalent figure for 1986 was 38 and for 1976, 19. The figure for 1996 is not available.
