235 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí recently placed on Border duty in view of the BSE scare and to monitor cattle movements; the total weekly cost of the additional gardaí on this duty; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18342/96]

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

238 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Justice the current number of gardaí from each division on temporary transfer to the Border due to the BSE crisis; the effect this is having on manning levels in each division; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18357/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 235 and 238 together.

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda resources and personnel. They have informed me that, following operational changes introduced earlier this month, there are 153 members on temporary transfer to Border divisions for the BSE operation.

The addition weekly cost to the Garda Síochána of the whole BSE operation is now approximately £300,000.

It would be contrary to established practice, for security reasons, to give further details about the redeployed gardaí.
