Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disability Allowance.

Mary Harney

Question:

268 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Social Welfare the plans, if any, he has to reform the eligibility criteria of the former disabled person's maintenance allowance payment to include sufferers of ME and CFS; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18483/96]

Disability allowance — formerly disabled person's maintenance allowance — is payable to people who are suffering from an injury, disease, or disability which is expected to continue for at least a year. The medical criteria for entitlement to disability allowance does not exclude conditions such as ME and CFS, and, accordingly, the question of reforming the eligibility criteria of the scheme does not arise.
