Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inishbofin Coastal Erosion.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

313 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for the Marine when a decision will be made on an application by Galway County Council for urgent necessary coastal erosion works on Inishbofin, which are needed to protect infrastructure and houses; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18503/96]

Inishbofin Island is one of a number of locations proposed by Galway County Council for consideration for aid under the Coastal Protection measure of the Environmental Services Operational Programme 1994-99. In 1995, grant aid was provided to Galway County Council to undertake a £100,000 protection scheme on the island. This work has been carried out by the council. Galway County Council's proposals were given further consideration in 1996. Another location proposed by the council, Tawin Island, was considered by the council and my Department to be more critical in the short-term. I am aware from the council's original submission and letter of 26 March 1996, of the erosion problem on Inishbofin Island and consideration will continue to be given to this location subject to the availability of funding.
