Liam Fitzgerald

Question:

73 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons awaiting trial in respect of offences under the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977 and 1984 as of 31 July 1996, who have been remanded on bail by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court pending the hearing of their trial. [18384/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 71 and 73 together.

Details of the number of persons remanded on bail pending the hearing of their trial before the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court as of 31 July 1996 are not readily available and could only be compiled by the allocation of scarce resources.

I can, however, inform the Deputy of the number of persons who were remanded on bail pending the hearing of their trial before the above court as of a current date. As of yesterday, 14 October, the relevant number was 227. Of that number, 33 persons were remanded on bail awaiting trial in respect of offences involving drugs.
