Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ground Rents.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

92 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the amount collected in ground rents in each of the years from 1990 to 1995; the percentages collected in Dublin, Cork and Limerick; the legal actions, if any, which have been taken against individuals on foot of non-payment of ground rents in each of these years. [18283/96]

The payment of ground rent is a private transaction between landlord and tenant and is one in which I have no function. Accordingly, my Department does not have statistics of amounts collected in ground rents.

With regard to legal actions taken on foot of non-payment of ground rents, the position is that court statistics of civil proceedings, which would include such actions are not categorised according to the class of action. Accordingly, the number of times any particular type of action was taken in the courts could not be ascertained without the examination of each individual court record. This would involve the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time which would not be warranted.
