Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Development.

Donal Moynihan

Question:

95 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí in the Garda Síochána who are not engaged in police work; the work such gardaí are engaged in; the plans, if any, she has to release these gardaí from desk duties; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18412/96]

The detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to different areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the only members of the Garda Síochána who are not engaged in police work are members who occupy civilian posts or posts which have been identified as suitable for civilianisation. The number of posts involved is approximately 200.

The anti-crime measures which I announced in July last, having obtained the approval of the Government, provides for the recruitment of an additional 200 civilians. This recruitment, which is already under way, will facilitate the release of an equivalent number to gardaí for operational duties and will augment the existing civilian staff of over 680 already working in clerical-administrative positions within the Garda Síochána.
