Vol. 470 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tourism Industry.

Ivor Callely

Question:

136 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the issues, if any, he has considered to help improve and enhance the tourism industry. [18884/96]

In seeking to improve and enhance the performance of the tourism industry I have, among other things, placed particular emphasis on ensuring the effective implementation of the operational programme for tourism and other tourism related EU funded Community initiatives. Together they represent the single largest concentration of investment in training, development and marketing of Irish tourism ever and I am determined that we fully avail of this unique opportunity to develop this important industry.

I have also emphasised the need for ongoing review of the effectiveness of the promotion and marketing of Ireland as a tourism destination. This has led to major initiatives such as the development of the new tourism brand due to be launched next month, increased joint marketing activity by Bord Fáilte and the industry and special marketing initiatives such as the off-season programme which was announced last week at the meeting of the Tourism Council.

In developing and pursuing these strategies I have maintained close consultation with the tourism industry itself so as to ensure that initiatives taken contribute the maximum towards improving and enhancing prospects for the industry.
