Vol. 470 No. 4

Written Answers. - Delivery of Examination Results.

Peter Barry

Question:

206 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education whether the technology and administration to post examination results to students at their homes is in place; if students or parents have contacted his Department in respect of having this process implemented; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19400/96]

My Department receives occasional inquiries from parents and students regarding the delivery of results to their homes.

There are a number of reasons for issuing results to the schools in the case of candidates entered by schools. In the first place, my Department wants to ensure that, as far as possible, all candidates receive their results on the same day. This is most desirable to minimise anxiety on the part of candidates and their parents. The position is that An Post can guarantee next-day delivery of the results to the 800 second level schools but cannot guarantee next-day delivery to the homes of so large a number of individual students.

I also stress that a very positive role is played by school principals and teachers in conveying the results directly to their students and in providing support to candidates who may be distressed by the results. Candidates who are disappointed can be reassured by the principal and teachers that there are options open to them, including the option of applying for a recheck.

I have no plans at this point to issue results to student's homes in the case of students who are entered for the certificate examinations by their schools.
