Limerick East): The amount paid by my Department in respect of public relations and publicity, excluding the cost of health promotion campaigns in each of the years 1994, 1995 and to date in 1996 was £104,025, £57,744 and £148,515 respectively. These payments include the cost of placing advertisements in newspapers and the media regarding public health advice and advising of changes in procedures, for example, the requirement under the Family Law Act to give three months notice in advance of a marriage.
The health promotion unit develops and provides information materials on a range of health matters both independently and in association with other health agencies. The unit's multi media activities have included public information campaigns in relation to smoking, drugs and HIV-AIDS. The unit also gives a high priority to nutrition. Approximate costs of these four major campaigns and associated materials are given below. The costs of some support materials and programmes, research, conferences etc., on these four issues are not included in the figures.
