Vol. 470 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hepatitis C Investigation.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

102 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice whether there is a Garda investigation into matters relating to the hepatitis C scandal whereby persons were infected by a blood product supplied by the Blood Transfusion Service Board; whether there ever was a Garda investigation into these matters; whether a file has been or will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in this matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19514/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that no formal complaint has been made to them in relation to the hepatitis C issue. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that there is no criminal investigation into the matter referred to by the Deputy nor has there ever been one. Because of this, there is no file in preparation for the DPP's office.

I am also informed that one woman who has sought assistance through a third party in this matter declined to make a statement to the Garda pending completion of a High Court action in which she is involved.
