Vol. 470 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Donegal Sewerage Schemes.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

133 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Environment the steps, if any, which can be taken to ensure that sewerage schemes (details supplied) in County Donegal, which are seeking funding, receive such funding on time to enable them to comply with the EU Directive; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19762/96]

Article 4 of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC) requires that urban waste water entering collecting systems should receive secondary treatment or an equivalent before discharge, depending on the size of the population centre and the type of receiving waters. Under this provision, Carndonagh will require secondary treatment, or an equivalent, by the year 2005. Buncrana, Malin, and Moville/Greencastle are outside the scope of Article 4, but will require appropriate treatment, as defined in the Directive, by the year 2005.

Given the high level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to approve proposals for the areas referred to.
