247 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the reason animals bearing both the metal BTE tag and plastic tag cannot be presented at livestock marts for sale; the date on which this decision was taken; the reason therefor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Animals tagged with both metal and plastic tags are not correctly identified as regards traceability and EU payment purposes.

The new procedure which was publicised in the last few weeks is considered essential for the purposes of quality assurance to consumers and customers abroad particularly in the current market situation.
