Question:

114 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice when will works begin on refurbishing Bray Garda Station, County Wickow and the building of an extension thereto; her views on whether portacabins are suitable accommodation for the Garda Síochána; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20141/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 113 and 114 together.

As the Deputy is aware, the long-term plan for Bray Garda Station is to refurbish and extend it. While it is not possible to say at this stage when work on this project might commence, it will be progressed as quickly as possible having regard to overall priorities and the availability of finance.

In the meantime, in order to alleviate the accommodation difficulties at the station, it is proposed to locate portacabins there. I am informed by the Office of Public Works that the required site works will commence this week and that the portacabins will be in place by the end of November. I also understand from the Garda Authorities that showering and locker facilities for the female members of the station party will be provided with the installation of these units. I should like to emphasise that they are being installed as a temporary measure only, pending the completion of the main works proposed for the existing station building.
