Vol. 470 No. 8

Written Answers. - Legal Proceedings Against Other States.

Mary Harney

Question:

42 Miss Harney asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the Attorney General has initiated any legal proceedings through the European courts against another State. [19199/96]

It is not entirely clear to which courts the Deputy is referring. I assume therefore that in using the term "European courts" she is referring to both the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxembourg and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. I have been informed by the Office of the Attorney General that to date the Attorney General has never initiated proceedings against another state before either of these courts.
